The Cormorant Fishermen who live near The Li River in Guilin are mostly part of the Wong people–a 35 generation ethnic group with cultural significance in the region. For over a thousand years, they have lived by the water and are known for their gas-lit bamboo raft, straw cape and dǒu lì hat. They have a deep bond with their birds and often develop a strong relationship with them.

To control the birds, the fishermen tie a loose snare near the base of the bird’s throat. They are skilled swimmers and they catch the fishes with their beak. The snare does not limit the bird from swallowing smaller fish but it prevents it from consuming larger catches–which are temporarily held in their gullet. Once caught, the bird will return back to the boat and where it regurgitates the fish. The bird is rewarded with a smaller fish as a treat. They use this method to feed their families and sell the remaining haul to the local market. 

Although this traditional way of life has been largely replaced, the Li River is closed off from modern fishing for environmental and cultural preservation. Today, as you walk around the Yangshuo riverside around sunset, you can spot the fishermen gather around on their gas-lit rafts. 

By chance, I encountered a fisherman in the Yangshuo County during a separate photoshoot. After respectfully asking the man for permission to capture his portrait, we created this photograph.
